Mountain Gate: Corn Woman
Corn Woman (SOLD)
Mountain Gate Series
Handwoven face of linen and handspun, plant-dyed wool from Maine island sheep. Felted merino wool headdress, plant-dyed with indigo root, wild goldenrod, and both indigo and weld from the artist's garden.
The brilliant yellows are created by the weld plant. Leaves from fresh indigo were steeped briefly with the wool to create the pale blue figure in the face.
This sculpture was unusual in that the face was woven on a four-harness loom, in a boundweave pattern, rather than woven with the fingers on a small tapestry loom.
